The city had a key role in the medieval history of the Maremma. In 805 it was ceded to the Aldobrandeschi (here originated in the eighth century by a powerful family Lombard),and then saw the command of the Orsini and Medici. The beautiful Sovana, in the central square is home to numerous historic buildings, including the Praetorian Palace(XIII century), the Loggia del Capitano and the Romanesque church of S. Mary, whosecanopy of fine workmanship dating from the early ninth century. Towards the campaignwill see the Duomo, the node between the artistic culture of Lazio, Pisa-Lucca andLombard. Is the fourth-century church of S. Mamigliano, built on an ancient pagan temple.
